Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Decks

Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Decks

These are questions our customers ask about the deck building process and we want you to know what to expect from Deck Works.

How can I get a "no maintenance" deck?

The last I looked there were approximately 95 products that claimed they were "no maintenance". The term "no maintenance" should be phrased more like "less maintenance". Why? Most composites (plastic & wood) can stain and sometimes scratch. The "no maintenance" claim by deck manufacturers simply mean you will not have to sand and stain your deck every year.

What are the options with deck screws? I don't want that many screw lines and is there a way to hide them?

Some products, primarily composites, are weaker and need joists as narrow as 9" on center for proper support. This creates many more screw lines. Expansion and contraction, or shrinkage, is also a factor. Some products have an extreme amount contraction at seams. It can be as much as 5/8" gaps in cold weather. There is a lot to know about these products because each manufacturer is not equal and behave differently. This is where a skilled craftsman is need for proper installation so the deck looks good all year long.

Today's products are moving toward blind fastener products. These are product with no screws that are visible. Also available is a 2-tone color finish creating a hardwood look. However, just like anything, more bells and whistles can cost more. We work to find a solution that meets the look you desire and your budget.

If my deck seams shrink and expand too much, is that covered by the manufacturers warranty?

We find it necessary to inform you that manufacturers are not warranting these important items, therefore placing huge expectations on us as an installer. We at Deck Works like to talk with you in detail about proven products in high altitude and how each product may or may not be a good fit for you. When you see the benefits and issues with each product it is easier to make an informed decision and find a product that best meets your needs.

What costs more - wood or composite decking?

Composites in general cost more than wood products however you save money in the long run. Sanding and sealing once a year with real wood can get costly. Manufacturers claim 5 years or more for many of their deck finishing products but that is not realistic for Colorado. In this altitude, wood needs to be sealed once per year. At Deck Works we can help save headaches and stop the confusion by cutting through the slick sales presentations found in manufacturers brochures and the big box home stores. We will give you the best information as products and deck technologies change. We treat our customers like family by giving you the facts we paid for with many years of experience in this business. This is another good reason to pick a knowledgeable specialist like Deck Works.

Will a new deck add value to my home?

According to Wikipedia, Value is the quality(positive or negative) that renders something desirable. At Deck Works, upon or first visit we want to establish what Value means to you and your family. If you can answer one simple question, have you decided to make your house your home? We can make your dreams become reality. If you answer yes, let's give your home the makeover it deserves so you can enjoy it fully. Imagine early morning sun rises and having breakfast on your deck. In the afternoons you can entertain friends and family with BBQ's or simply read a good book during light rain. When it's time to relax, the accent lights show you the way to your hot tub. Just slip into the hot tub and take in the night sky. All of this right in your backyard.

If you have more of a temporary situation, 5 years or less, let's take a different approach and look at it as an investment tool. Decks add to appreciation of a home and is very well considered in your buyers decision making. If you want to command the most interest in your property (meaning the most value) a deck can get you great curb appeal while you enjoy it from day one.

Why hire it out? I can do it myself or my friend can help me.

We at Deck Works know by being a specialist that these items are very important. We continually exceed our clients expectations in these important areas. Since every project is tailor made to fit each clients needs - size, shape, levels, furniture, materials, look, etc. - we will discuss an approximate start date as well as a project finish date. At Deck Works we Start, we Stay and we Satisfactorily complete your project!

The importance of a specialized trade. Like many professions in a particular field, there is specialized knowledge that is extremely helpful for the process to move smoothly, meet your budget and finish on time. For example in construction you have framers, builders, plumbers, electricians, etc. Each have guidelines, various tools of the trade, building codes and other things that vary considerably. You wouldn't ask a plumber to wire your house and it does not make sense to have a handyman build a deck. Are you a handyman? At Deck Works we are very specialized in deck and framing construction. We know the building codes, zoning restrictions, set backs, etc. and will make sure your job is finished on time while making sure everything meets the city codes and ordinances. Fines for not meeting the city codes and ordinances start at $5,000.

How long will it take to build my deck?

A basic project start to finish average is 1 - 2 weeks. However, more complex projects can take 4 - 6 weeks. When asked, how much does a deck cost, it's much like a car. Do you want an economy or sports car? Just the basics or the luxury package? Anything is possible and we would like to talk to you about your needs.

What about the manufacturers specifications?

Manufacturers specifications can give you pros vs. cons on the realities of products. Craftsman with everyday use of these products, bits, blades and various tools of the trade only come with time. You don't want to spend 10K on products and then start on-the-job training with your house. A professional can save you time and money.

I'm tired of staining my deck every year. How much will it cost for a composite deck and is recapping the answer?

Save money and recap your deck with composite decking. This option works very well when your existing deck is less than 8 years old, up to code and you are comfortable with the size and shape. If you are in that category you could save approximately 50% on you deck compared to a new build. Decks tend to have top rot which occurs from the fasteners on the top of the boards. This rot trickles down the shank and into the frame below. Sort of like a cavity in a tooth. A recap with composite is becoming more popular due to the attractive price and it may be just what you are looking for to update and upgrade your house.

Do I have to wait until spring to start construction?

We can build in the winter months and we encourage it. It's also one of the benefits of living in the great state of Colorado. Snow one day and blue sky the next! Now you could wait until spring but we work on a first come first serve basis - which can turn into a backlog of jobs when spring begins. In peak season the wait can be 1 - 3 months to start a project. The construction will take slightly longer in the winter but Deck Works will work daily on your project and call you when inclement weather hinders progress.

Communication is the key to Deck Works business and our customers satisfaction. We will not compromise the project due to the weather on our project and will meet our obligations to keep you a satisfied customer.

How do I get started?

First you can fill out our contact information and I will personally call you. If you prefer you can call me at (719) 661-3403 and we can discuss the project you have in mind. We can schedule a meeting at your convenience and I will work with your schedule and we can meet at your home or business. I ask that all people be present that have input into the design (i.e. husband and wife). Again, this is just for clear communication. Let me know the benefit you are looking for in this project. Lifestyles are a big part of the deck design process and I have developed a unique checklist with questions most couples have not yet discussed. My goal at Deck Works is to make sure your new living space will be a proper fit to meet your outdoor living needs.
